Know your goal

Know your goal

When writing a video script, the most important question you should ask yourself is:

Why am I doing this?

Is it to sell a product? Communicate an important update? Or to educate people on a particular topic?

You need to:

  1. Decide on a single goal *
  2. Make it specific (what exactly do you want to achieve?)
  3. Write your script to achieve your goal

* Top tip – only have one goal per video to make sure your message is clear.

How to script your video to achieve your goal

Once you’ve decided on your goal, you can draft an outline plan for the whole video. This is where you decide the location, structure, length and format of the film.

You also need to figure out your key message that will hook your audience right from the start. Ask yourself: What is the most important idea that every viewer needs to grasp in order for me to achieve my goal?

Finally, what’s your call to action? What do you want people to do after watching your video?

Only now are you ready to start writing your script.

But because of the preparation you’ve done, you’ll already know what you want to say and how you want to say it.

Script every word to keep it short and succinct – but make it conversational. If you find that a script sounds too formal when you read it back, reverse the process. First speak out what you want to say, then write it down.

When it comes to communicating your key message, you’ll only have a few seconds to grab and hold people’s attention. So make sure you include it early on in a clear and compelling way.

Know your goal, trust your planning and go for it!
