For most of us, doing something new is both exciting and scary. We’re wired to be cautious about change. Fear is our natural protector. But having the courage to overcome it can set us apart; it’s the key to success.
Some of the most amazing creations, inventions and movements of history are because one individual chose to embrace courage over fear. To lay down their concerns over what others might think, and go for it.
After countless failed attempts, Orville Wright – one half of the famous Wright brothers – made the first successful powered flight in 1903. It wouldn’t have happened if he’d let fear, or the mocking of doubters, get in the way.
The inscription on the Wright memorial at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina reads:
“In commemoration of the conquest of the air by the brothers Wilbur and Orville Wright. Conceived by genius. Achieved by dauntless resolution and unconquerable faith.”
History really does confirm that courage is the key to success.
How does being brave make me a better video creator?
In 2020, more people than ever downloaded the Teleprompter for Video app. For lots of people, it was a year of dramatic shifts.
Living under lockdown meant big changes in the way that we work and socialise. Video is now the most powerful way to communicate.
To embrace this, we’ve all needed to become braver. Starting to record your own videos – and more importantly, to share them – is a big step. It can be frightening to learn a new skill, adapt to new ways of communicating, and we risk being laughed at if we get it wrong.
But be encouraged by the story of the Wright brothers and have the courage to go for it. Try new techniques and keep persevering. Don’t worry about mistakes, just try again.
It will be worth it. You will get better and better. Practice really does make perfect.
Being courageous together
One of the biggest motivators in overcoming fear is knowing that you’re not alone. That there are others who are cheering you on and offering advice and encouragement.
